Story

On a crazy whim in June 2023, I decide I wanted to walk the entire Cheshire Ring canal towpath loop - 97 miles long - with the intention to do it in 8 days straight! As it turns out, on day one, my knees clearly showed me that this would not be possible, so I reset my parameters and completed the full circuit throughout July and August.

The experience of walking along the canals was fantastic and gave me more than I could have imagined, both physically and mentally, with such a profound effect on my mood and well-being! Once the Ring was completed, I was totally hooked and I continued on to walk along further canals over the following months, clocking up a total of 170 miles in total.

I have become very fond of the canals through all this and even though I am not a boater, the towpaths have become incredibly important to me, enabling me to access beautiful areas, be out in fresh air, enjoy amazing wildlife and to meet great characters along the way.

When I saw this Canalathon pop up in my news feed, it was a total no-brainer that I would sign up; I've been out walking a few sectors already this year and of course as summer approaches, it is my intention to really pack in those miles (after all, one day I want to have traversed all 2,000!)

So, in June I will commit 100% to walking a marathon to support the CRT, but to be honest I intend to smash that tally! I really hope you will support me on this challenge - I will be keeping regular updates on my progress so you will be able to follow me along 26.2 miles and beyond!

Here's the blurb from CRT:

Help keep canals alive!

Almost nine million people live less than a mile from one of the Canal & River Trusts waterways, making them popular and accessible places to exercise. But the nation's ageing canals are under threat, with costly repairs required to keep them open for the communities who enjoy them and for the wildlife that depends on them.

Together we can help nature flourish, protect the heritage of our canals in the face of climate change and deliver health, happiness and wellbeing to millions of people.
