Running the Run4Mums for Sophie Fitzpatrick Charitable Foundation

Emma Villiers is raising money for The Sophie Fitzpatrick Charitable Foundation for Rare Cancers
In memory of Sophie Fitzpatrick

Run4Mums Battersea Park · 4 July 2026

We help people who have been diagnosed with a rare cancer. The Sophie Fitzpatrick Charitable Foundation for Rare Cancers is here to support people who have been diagnosed with a rare cancer, especially with cancer of the appendix or goblet cell carcinoma, like Sophie. This cancer is so rare that the number of cases in the UK is undocumented, and at the moment only 1,000 people in the USA are diagnosed with it out of a population of 341 million people. So there is little support and few resources to help – we aim to change this.

Story

Am taking part in the annual Run4Mums held by my four lovely nephews in memory of their mother, my sister Sophie. Will be running the 5k segment and hope to achieve this in under 40 minutes. The cause is close to my heart - raising funds for the Foundation set up in Sophie's name to support people who get diagnosed with rare cancers - providing practical help to people who are not only struggling with a diagnosis but who then find that the help they need is located in 'centres of excellence' far from home. An example of their work:

The Foundation has established a relationship with the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) late last year, which supports families of children, some as young as one month old, who are afflicted with Retinoblastoma, a completely vile eye cancer. The impact of the cancer is such that treatment is urgently required and intense, meaning in a lot of instances at least one parent has to stop work. There are only two centres in the UK that offer treatment, so travel is constant.

The Foundation has been supporting five families with grants to help with travel, sustenance and overnight stays in hotels.
