"What we take for granted can be someone else’s daily challenge."
On May 9th, we (Emma and Carolynne) will be climbing Ben Nevis to raise funds for North East Sensory Services (NESS).
Ben Nevis will test us both mentally and physically, but it is a challenge we have chosen. For many people living with sensory loss, the challenges aren't optional - they are part of every day life.
Vision and hearing loss can affect anyone, at any stage of life. Yet because many of us don't experience it directly, the barriers faced by those who do are often unseen and misunderstood. Whether it's accessing information, moving confidently through public spaces or simply feeling included.
NESS exists to change that. As a local charity, they support people who are blind, partially sighted, Deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind to navigate daily life with greater confidence, independence and dignity.
For Emma, this climb is also personal. Her son was born with a rare genetic condition resulting in visual impairment, and through him she has seen how easily every day situations can become challenging. This experience has reshaped how she understands accessibility, inclusion and the importance of early, compassionate support.
The climb is about awareness as much as fundraising - because none of us knows when we, or someone we love, might need this kind of support.
Every donation is so appreciated.
Thank you :)
