Background

Emma and Hollie, close childhood friends, will be taking on the challenge of trekking across the Sahara Desert in aid of St Clare Hospice in memory of 'Gary Meek'.

We will be taking on highs of 35°C during the day and lows of 0°C at night as we spend 2 full days and two half days trekking across the Sahara.(ancient dried up river beds, sand dunes and vast sun-baked plains)

This is a total of approx 50km/over 30 miles. We will be camping along the way finishing our trip by helping community projects in Marrakech.

The challenge is 8 days overall: March 9th-16th 2024

Our Story

Gary Meek (Emmas Dad) was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer on 24 December 2021. We were told he had one year to live however in true Gary Meek fashion, determined and stubborn, he outlived his prognosis by 7 months. Gary continued to live each day with strength and ambition, attending music gigs with friends, family trips, performing with his band and even got to walk Emma down the aisle on her wedding day.

He never gave up and was always laughing and joking, right till the very end of his journey where he continued to be supported and looked after by the amazing team as St Clare Hospice.

Gary passed peacefully at St Clare Hospice on 14 July 2023 with his family around him.

It is coming up to 2 months since our loss but with this comes a huge amount of determination to make a difference, give back to St Clare and to continue living in memory of Gary Meek.

All money raised will be donated to St Clare Hospice, allowing them to continue providing vital care and support services to individuals and their families who are experiencing a life-limiting illness, facing end of life and/or experiencing bereavement - every penny makes a difference.

St Clare Hospice: St Clare Hospice is a local charity and each year we care for hundreds of people across West Essex and the East Hertfordshire border. We provide free, compassionate care and support to adults who are living with a life-limiting illness, facing the end of life or experiencing bereavement.
