Story
At EPIC, we’re proud to dedicate our fundraising efforts to support Blood Cancer UK in honour of two inspiring individuals: Nicola Welfare (EPIC General Manager) and Paul Street (Weald of Kent Golf Club Managing Director). Both have faced their battles with blood cancer with incredible strength and resilience, and their stories remind us of the importance of supporting ongoing research and patient care.
Nicola's Journey
In December 2021, Nicola Welfare’s journey began unexpectedly when an MRI for back pain revealed concerning shading on her spine. Following further scans and biopsies, she was diagnosed in February 2022 with Non-Hodgkins Follicular Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that is treatable but not curable. Nicola’s battle included six rounds of chemotherapy and two additional rounds when her post-treatment scan showed persistent cancer. In October 2022, Nicola received the life-changing news that she was in full metabolic remission. However, her journey didn’t end there; she required 12 rounds of immunotherapy every eight weeks to maintain her remission. Nicola completed this phase of treatment in July 2024 and continues to be closely monitored with regular consultations every six months.
Nicola’s story is a testament to resilience and the importance of continued support for blood cancer research, as her diagnosis had been masked by symptoms that resembled menopause for four to five years.
Paul’s Journey
Paul Street’s story began in 2006, when he was diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukaemia after months of unexplained symptoms. He underwent chemotherapy and treatment with Rituximab, overcoming numerous complications and entering remission just five months after diagnosis. Now, in his 17th year of remission, Paul remains dedicated to supporting Blood Cancer UK, taking on sporting challenges and fundraising efforts to ensure others benefit from the same advancements that saved his life.
Both Nicola and Paul embody courage, determination, and a commitment to making a difference for others affected by blood cancer. By donating to this campaign, you’re honouring their stories and supporting vital research that helps fund treatments and provide hope to those battling this disease.
Together, we can support research that brings us closer to a world where blood cancer is no longer a threat. Thank you for being part of this meaningful cause.
