Erica's fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians

I have many special memories from my time living in Gaza although it is now 33 years ago! I remember the warmth, hospitality and best street food falafel and hummus I've ever eaten. I also remember the refugee camps and people trying to survive living under a brutal occupation without free movement or basic human rights.
It is a relief that close friends have either passed away before this conflict or are now living in the diaspora. But this does not take away deep anguish and horror at the inhumanity and violence that we are witnessing. As we embark on the festive season it is difficult to process the sheer scale of suffering in the Holy Land.
As an active member of North Herts Palestine Solidarity Campaign I feel the need to do something practical and have been inspired by my wonderful Mum who is donating £900 to Palestinian health charities rather than buying presents for adults this year. I will also reduce Christmas spending and instead donate to this fundraiser.
The photo is when I did a mountain challenge for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) in 2016 with my son. I have known the amazing work of this charity since the 1980s. They are currently responding to the unprecedented healthcare emergency resulting from Israel's bombardment and siege of Gaza. MAP are distributing medicines, disposables and lab reagents for hospitals, and mattresses, blankets and hygiene kits for thousands of displaced people. They have also set up operations in Egypt and are procuring additional supplies and support to take into Gaza through the Rafah crossing.
