In 2026, the Holst Victorian House Museum in Cheltenham will mark the 150th birthday of Ernest Cossart (1876–1951)—a remarkable but often overlooked figure in the town’s history.
Born at what is now the Holst Victorian House, Cossart (originally Emil von Holst) went on to build a successful career as a stage and film actor in America. He appeared on Broadway and in Hollywood alongside stars such as Ginger Rogers, Bob Hope and Katharine Hepburn, including a notable role in the 1940 film Kitty Foyle.
To celebrate his life and achievements, the museum is planning a special exhibition and is aiming to install a Cheltenham Civic Society blue plaque on the building where he was born—alongside the existing plaque for his brother, the composer Gustav Holst.
It is extremely rare for a building to have two plaques, and this would be a unique opportunity to recognise the extraordinary contributions of both Holst brothers.
To make this happen, we need to raise £500 to cover the cost of the plaque, installation, listed building consent, and an unveiling event on Cossart’s 150th birthday in September 2026.
By donating, you’ll be helping to preserve and celebrate Cheltenham’s cultural heritage—and ensure Ernest Cossart’s story is remembered for generations to come.
As a thank you, donors will be invited to attend the official unveiling event.
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a real difference.
