Esmé's fundraiser for The Wave Project

Esmé Mullen is raising money for The Wave Project

Team: Team fundraising for The Wave Project

The Wave Project is a national charity delivering Surf Therapy. We combine the power of the ocean (and other blue spaces), physical activity and trusted relationships to build resilience, confidence and calm. Fundraise with us and help more young people access early support that works!

Story

This summer, to celebrate 15 years of The Wave Project, our team is taking on "15 Peaks of Summer". Each team member will climb 15 peaks between 1 July and 31 August, raising funds to support young people’s mental health.

From city hills to local fells and iconic Munros, each peak is a personal challenge. Celebrating the outdoors, pushing ourselves, and marking The Wave Project’s milestone anniversary.

Our aim is to raise £15,000 as a team, with every donation helping provide surf therapy and mental health support to young people who need it most.

This is more than a challenge. It’s a celebration of achievement, adventure, and the difference we can make together. Every peak climbed brings us closer to changing lives of young people.

Over the last 5 years I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering with The Wave Project Scotland. From the first session in St Andrews in 2021, to the opening of Lost Shore Surf Resort in 2024, I’ve seen first hand the positive and life changing impact the wave project has on the mental and physical well-being of children and young people across the community.

Through the creation of a safe space, children and young people get to enjoy the benefits of being in, near and around the sea, whilst being surrounded by a bunch of positive role models in the community! 🏄🏻‍♀️

Increasing evidence states a reorganisation of mental health services is needed and a shift towards more community-based mental health services. I’m super passionate about the link between spending time in nature (especially blue spaces 🐬🐬), community intervention and improving health outcomes. Time spent in blue spaces has been associated with increased levels of happiness, enhanced moods and reduced levels of stress!

It’s been a beautiful sight to watch so many young people reap the benefits of surf therapy, growing in confidence and enjoying themselves in a community outdoor setting. I feel extremely grateful to be part of such a special community :)

My academic research (2023) explored the positive impact of volunteering in blue spaces on volunteer well-being outcomes, highlighting a positive impact of the project on the wider community. I know I get as much out of the sessions as the kiddos!

I’ll be climbing 15 peaks this summer to raise awareness and funds for wave project to ensure the fun continues! Any spare pennies are greatly appreciated 🏄🏻‍♀️

If anyone wants to get involved, find out more about wave project or perhaps join me for a hike, give me a message!

And if you read this far here’s your daily reminder to get outside! 🧠
