Story
Hi, my name is Esme, and I am going to be running a half marathon this November for the UK’s eating disorder charity BEAT.
BEAT is a charity close to my heart. In 2020 I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder with the highest mortality rate among mental health conditions. Eating disorders are so often misunderstood. It is not just about food or weight. It is about control, fear and often pain that hasn’t found another outlet.
Throughout my recovery I learned that what you spend your life controlling is often controlling you! Anorexia robbed me of my joy, happiness and moments that I will never get back. Recovery was not easy, however I was lucky enough to have support from my family and friends, Who each day, helped remind me that life is worth living. I had to rebuild my relationship with food and with myself - and now years later, I am running for the version of me who never thought I would be strong enough to do this. I am not running to shrink myself, but to take up space, and celebrate my strength and recovery!
BEAT doesn’t just offer support to individuals with eating disorders, but also to their families. They offered support to my family as we navigated and battled through a difficult time in our lives. I am forever grateful for them providing a safe and supportive environment where my family could seek support and reassurance.
If you want to support me by sharing, donating or simply cheering me on as I train for my half marathon I would be most grateful!
Your support helps BEAT be there for the next person who needs to hear “you are not alone”.
Recovery is possible - and this run is proof of that
