Story
This year Brampton students and staff will work together to raise funds and awareness for Edukid’s projects in Uganda. Money raised will be split between funding children's education generally, and more specifically supporting The Bonga Girls Project.
The Bonga Girls Project (meaning 'Let's Talk') is an empowerment programme for out-of- school girls and young women aged 11-19 in Uganda. The girls enrolled have never had access to, of have dropped out of the formal education system, as a result of various cultural and life impediments. Most commonly a lack of schools fees, teenage pregnancy, early marriages and gender inequality.
The Bonga project create communities of support and reliable social networks for vulnerable girls and women, particularly young mothers who need to support their babies.
The project is a 1-year programme, which focuses on life skills and business skills training, as well as vocational training. Ultimately, with the skills and knowledge developed trough the Bonga Project, these girls become less reliant on external support, and instead become financially independent and self reliant. As a result they can then support their young children through education.
Brampton students will plan, promote and stage fundraising events across the year before hopefully visiting Uganda next October to see first-hand the positive impact they have made to children’s lives.
