Why is Fairtrade Fortnight important?

Kiambu County and the town of Thika, where many Porridge Club schools are located, are known for their coffee farms, tea plantations and flower fields. These industries have supported local jobs for years, but they are typically low-paying and while a growing number of Collectives are leading to improvements, they remain among the lowest paid industries in Kenya.

Many local coffee farms have also been sold and redeveloped, reducing opportunities for employment and forcing former farm workers to move into informal slum settlements where sanitation is poor, earning potential is further reduced and more children become reliant on school Porridge Clubs to attend school each day - rather than having to work, scavenge or beg on the streets for food.
