Why we’re taking on this challenge

The Farm Business Survey has been working with farmers and farming families across England for 90 years. Since 1936, we’ve been collecting detailed data, having real conversations, and helping to build an honest picture of how farm businesses work, adapt and thrive.

Over the decades, the survey has played a key role in helping shape agricultural policy through robust data, long‑term insight and real farm experience. But at the heart of the survey has always been people: farmers giving their time, sharing their knowledge, and helping shape the future of the industry.

One of the best parts of our work is the conversations we have every day. Farming is full of skill, resilience and humour, and there’s enormous pride in what people do. It’s a demanding sector, but it’s also a strong and supportive one.

Why we’re supporting the Farming Community Network

That’s why we’re so pleased to be supporting the Farming Community Network (FCN).

FCN offers confidential, practical and pastoral support to people in farming — from a listening ear, to help thinking things through when decisions feel heavy. Their volunteers understand farming life and the pressures that can come with it, which makes their support trusted and genuinely useful.

Sometimes just having someone who understands the context can make all the difference. FCN quietly does that work, day in and day out, across the farming community.

About the challenge

To celebrate the survey’s 90‑year history and raise funds for FCN, we’re taking on a walking and step challenge, tracking our progress through the Big Team Challenge app.

This year, we’re marking the milestone by aiming for 90 miles per team, for 90 years of the Farm Business Survey — a collective effort that reflects nine decades of listening to farmers, collecting trusted data, and supporting the future of the farming sector.

It’s a chance for us to come together, get moving, enjoy a bit of friendly competition — and put some real energy behind a cause that matters deeply to the people and communities we work with.
