Climbing Mount Snowdon for Twins Trust
The team at FASTSIGNS Birmingham — Tom, Sally, Ben, Meadow and Amy — are taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon to raise money for Twins Trust, a charity that’s very close to our hearts.
Last year, our Managing Director, Tom, and Business Development Manager, Sally, found out they were expecting twins. What should have been the happiest of times quickly turned into one of the most frightening. At just 16 weeks, their babies were diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS).
TTTS is a rare but serious complication that can happen in identical twin pregnancies when babies share a placenta. Instead of receiving nutrients and blood evenly, one twin becomes the “donor” — losing blood and amniotic fluid — while the other becomes the “recipient” and is overloaded. Without treatment, the chances of survival for both babies are heartbreakingly low.
In Tom and Sally’s case, the placenta was divided in such a way that no surgery was initially possible. The only option was daily scans, waiting to see if a chance would arise. Miraculously, a small surgical window appeared. They were rushed in for laser ablation surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Against all odds, the operation was successful and both babies began to grow strong again.
At 35 weeks, Sally needed an emergency C-section. Their daughters, Lily and Lyla, were born safely — and just two weeks ago, they celebrated their first birthday as two healthy, joyful little girls.
We know how fortunate this outcome was, and sadly, not every family facing TTTS gets the same ending. That’s why our team — Tom, Sally, Ben, Meadow and Amy — are climbing Mount Snowdon to raise vital funds for Twins Trust. The charity funds research, supports families, and works tirelessly to improve outcomes for multiple pregnancies.
Every step we take up that mountain is for Lily and Lyla, and for all the families who face the uncertainty of a twin or triplet pregnancy. If you can, please donate and share, to help us support this life-changing cause.
