Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro · 7 September 2024

Since 2012 we have seen an increase of over 235% in the amount of people seeking our support. People of all ages, their families, friends and carers. Our vision is quite simply to make Jersey a more dementia friendly island where everyone is understood, welcomed and supported.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

For those who know me, you will all know that I absolutely LOVE a challenge (and that I'm a little competitive, but only a little bit ha ha)!

I have completed many fundraising events over the years, including Wing Walking, Sky Dives, climbing the 3 Peaks in under 24hrs, etc. So I wanted my next challenge to be even bigger, and I think this definitely meets the criteria.

Me and my cousin, Natalie, have signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this September.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania, Africa. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5895m (3.663 miles high). It will take us 6 days to climb, we will be camping on the mountain in small tents ⛺️!

The temperatures are variable and difficult to predict, we need to be prepared for warm, sunny conditions and rain, wind, cold and snow. Temperatures at the base are around 27°C and night temps at the peak can be as low as -29°C. 🥶 We are also required to protect ourselves against various diseases, including Malaria (so we will be taking Malaria tablets prior to departing)!

We also need to train and be prepared for the altitude. At the summit of Kilimanjaro, there is approximately 49% less oxygen and it is likely that we may experience Mild Acute Mountain Sickness 🤢!

We are taking part in the Trek as part of a company called 'Discover Adventure'. We are collectively raising money for Dementia, something that thankfully my family hasn't been affected by, but lots of my close friend's families unfortunately have been.

We are required to raise a minimum of £3400 for the charity, on top of our own personal costs of £2800 each (which we are personally covering of course).

So our plea: PLEASE PLEASE donate to this worthy cause and charity. I know that all charities are amazing, and some are more personal to others, but even if you have not been personally affected by Dementia, I'm sure someone you know has.

Anything you can give will be hugely appreciated. Help us reach our target 🙏🙏 and wish us good luck on our epic adventure! Roll on Africa, we've got this Nat 🤞🙌🙈
