Feriedoun EFTEKHARI is raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK

10,000 steps a day for 365 days · 15 August 2024

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

I am 82 year old and pledge to walk at least 10,000 steps a day for 365 days, starting 8 December 2023 to raise as much as I can for Alzheimer’s Research Uk.

Six years ago when my wife Parvin changed her car with an almost identical model she found it hard to adapt to the new one. Around the same time she lost her way home while having a walk locally. At that time I suspected a kind of memory problem but wasn’t quite sure until in our last holiday on May 2018 when we went to a supermarket for the third time, she told me that this is a very good place, why we didn’t come here before and also in our aparthotel she couldn’t find her way to the bedroom.

Parvin and I got married nearly 57 years ago while we were class mates in medical school. After finishing medical school we went to military service together and then started speciality training. Parvin became a Histopathologist and me an Orthopaedic surgeon. She was a bright, knowledgeable devoted pathologist. A few years after we moved to the UK in 1985 she was exempted from required exams to practice in this country and awarded MRCPath. She was a Co Author of one of the first papers on hepatitis C along with Professor Peter Scheuer and Dame Sheila Sherlock, two of the world's top specialists in liver disease. She served as a consultant for several years and retired in 2010. Unfortunately Alzheimer began few years after she started enjoying her retirement.

Now it is nearly three years that she doesn’t recognise me, our two children and five grandchildren. Unable to do the simplest things in life.

Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease which starts slowly by producing an abnormal protein in the brain, replacing the normal cells. Effecting memory first and then gradually all parts of the body.

Fortunately during the last few years a blood test to make an early diagnosis is in its final stages of development and a few drugs to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s, but still nothing to treat the condition and stops the devastating effects of Amyloid in the brain.
