Cycling around the world

The Chellington Centre is an award winning, eco-friendly, residential youth centre - an inspirational space where schools and youth groups can experience life together, encouraging teamwork, reflection and personal development. The Chellington Bursary Fund offers financial support to schools and organisations that deliver life changing experiences at Chellington for disadvantaged young people.

Story

For a long time I have had this itch.

The kind of itch that is stuck in the deep parts of your brain, so deep that it’s almost forgettable. But it’s there, and it doesn’t go away, it kept me up at night. I let it change, morph and conceptualise for a long time before I even said the words aloud, even to myself.

“I want to cycle around the world.”

As soon as I said that, the brakes came off, and I couldn’t stop the thought from snowballing into a plan. It became more fleshed-out and real, turned into a project that demanded all I my attention.

For a long time in my life, I have felt like I have just coasted, created no ripple as I pass through the world around me. I wanted something that would need my undivided attention and make a positive impact on the world, and more importantly, the community around me.

My grandad passed away in May 2024 and left a legacy behind that very few people will ever achieve. While I could fill a book with stories of the positive impact he had on people, perhaps his most lasting legacy was that of the Chellington Centre. A 12th century church, taken under the wing of youth of the 1970’s and turned into a youth centre in September 2005. Built to provide a resource for the community and bring people into the outdoors, Chellington is a facility for all.

The Chellington Bursary Fund offers financial support to organisations that look to deliver life-changing experiences at Chellington to disadvantaged young people. The fund gives opportunities to young people in particular need, whether that be through ill health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. By providing funding for groups who find it impossible to finance residential stays for their beneficiaries, it gives disadvantaged young people who are the least likely ever to experience it, a chance to relax in nature.

As soon as the thought of cycling around the world was cemented in my head as something I wanted to do, I knew it had the possibility to make a positive impact on the world around me. A ripple in the otherwise still world I was in. And so on the 24th of May, I will set off, with the aim of covering 40,000km, over 20 countries and four continents, all with the aim of raising money for the Chellington Centre.

If anything in this story has resonated with you — whether it’s the pull of adventure, the desire to do something that matters, or simply the memory of someone who made the world a better place — I’d be incredibly grateful for your support. Every donation goes directly to the Chellington Bursary Fund, helping to give young people the kind of transformative experiences my grandad believed in so deeply. This ride is my way of honouring him, and if you’re able to contribute, no matter the amount, you’ll be part of that ripple too. Let’s give more kids the chance to explore, breathe, and grow in the outdoors — just like he would have wanted.
