RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.

Story

Hello! We are Finn (age 13) and Kerry-Anne, a mother and son team from Scotland who love to walk, camp and simply spend time outdoors together. We hope our adventures will inspire other families to do the same!

Last year we set out on our biggest adventure together, hiking the entire length of the 630 mile South West Coast Path from Minehead to Poole Harbour. As far as we know, Finn (then age 12) became the youngest person to walk the path as a continuous hike. We ended up walking more like 750 miles in 64 days (including 4 days off!). We carried all of our own equipment including a tent and stove and camped almost every night at different campsites. We raised over £4,500 for the RNLI thanks to donations from friends and family and a lot of wonderfully kind and encouraging people we met on the path.

This year Finn wants to challenge himself even more by walking even further; 1000 miles around the perimeter of Wales, following the 870 mile Wales Coast path around the Welsh coast followed by the 177 mile Offa’s Dyke Path along the Wales-England border. Once again, if he succeeds he will be the youngest person to do so.

We will be starting our walk in late April 2024 and hope to finish by the end of July. Once again we will be carrying our tent, sleeping and cooking gear ourselves and camping most nights along the way. Although it was Finn’s idea to walk around Wales, I am so excited to be returning to the country where I spent most of my childhood, 26 years since I left! I am particularly looking forward to hearing the beautiful Welsh accent and language and eating Welsh cakes again!

Finn is fundraising once again for the RNLI, on this, their 200 year anniversary. Despite living just about as far away as is possible from the coast in Scotland, Finn has been a passionate supporter of the RNLI since the age of 4, inspired by the skill, dedication and perseverance of the RNLI volunteer lifesavers who brave all conditions and weather to go to sea and risk their lives to save others. One of his highlights when walking around the South West Coast Path was to call in and talk to the RNLI crew volunteers about their work and the lifeboats (especially when he got the chance to sit in the coxwain’s seat!)

We are both excited and anxious about the challenge ahead and we anticipate plenty of opportunities to remind ourselves of, and to learn from, the grit, endurance and perseverance of the RNLI volunteers as we face our own hardships and challenges on the path.

We are so, so grateful for your kindness and support and welcome any words of encouragement or donations you are able to make, however small. Thank you!

Too many people are still drowning. More than ever we need the RNLI’s help. As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe.

RNLI lifesavers are our lifeline. They’re the lifeboat crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland. The lifeguards keeping watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands. And the RNLI safety teams and educators working tirelessly to stop people getting into trouble in the first place.

Thank you.
