On the 17th of August 2026 I swam the English Channel to raise money for Mencap Splash Class.

The Channel is 21 miles (34 km) wide, but due to strong tides and currents, swimmers often cover considerably more distance. In the span of 12 hour 8 mins, I faced cold water, rough seas, powerful currents, jellyfish, darkness, and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

I swam under the strict rules of the Channel Swimming Association (CSA). This means no wetsuit and no thermal protection—just a standard swimsuit, cap, goggles, and earplugs. Touching the support boat or another person at any point during the swim is strictly forbidden.

This challenge feels even more special because 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Gertrude Ederle becoming the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926. Her achievement broke barriers, inspired generations, and remains one of the greatest moments in sporting history. To attempt this crossing during the centenary of her remarkable accomplishment is both a privilege and a source of inspiration.

I took on this challenge to support Mencap Splash Class, which provides specialist swimming lessons for young children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). These sessions help children gain confidence in the water and develop a vital life skill in a safe, supportive environment.

This work is particularly important because children with SEND are at a significantly higher risk of drowning and often face greater barriers to accessing mainstream swimming lessons. Learning to swim is not just about enjoyment-it can be life-saving.
