Fiona's fundraiser for Lobular Breast Cancer Research at the Manchester Breast Centre

Fiona Andrews is raising money for University of Manchester

I'm swimming a mile a day in October to raise funds for research into the basic biology of invasive lobular breast cancer.

We believe our students and research have the potential to change the world. Our supporters do too. Donations to Manchester help ensure that bright students can study here, regardless of their background. And they support our work to tackle pressing global issues like cancer, energy and poverty.

Story

I was diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer in September 2022. I couldn't believe that my 5cm tumour mass had failed to be detected by a mammogram which I'd had 2 months before. In the months that followed I learnt more about the disease - that lobular frequently doesn't show up on a mammogram and that despite its unique biology it has no specific treatment. Lobular breast cancer has been known about since the 1970's, but still remains an unmet clinical need. Fast forward to May 2023, and the launch of the Lobular Moon Shot Project which was set up by Dr Susan Michaelis and her husband Tristan Loraine. The project is campaigning for further research into the basic biology of the disease and the Manchester Breast Centre (part of the University of Manchester) is our chosen research partner for this. They will work with other research institutions to advance our global knowledgeof the disease, and ultimately find kinder treatments for women with invasive lobularbreast cancer.

Students and researchers at The University of Manchester have the power to change the world. Whether it’s fighting cancer, tackling poverty or finding more sustainable sources of energy to fuel our future, they’re addressing society’s biggest issues.

But they can’t do this alone. A gift from you today, no matter how big or small, will help pave the way to a better world tomorrow.

From helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds to supporting life-changing research, a donation from you will make the world of difference.
