Story
I’m excited to team up with my amazing friends—Wendy, Judith, and Gill—to take on a 21-mile walk to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity. This challenge is a tribute to Wendy’s incredible husband, Russell, who sadly passed away at just 44 years old.
Russell’s journey was marked by tremendous courage as he fought through oesophageal cancer and two brain tumours, enduring countless surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy at the Beatson Cancer Centre, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Forth Valley Royal Infirmary, and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Thanks to the exceptional care he received and his incredible strength, he managed to overcome many obstacles. However, we learned that the cancer had metastasised, and with no treatment options available, Russell succumbed to Leptomeningeal disease on December 28, 2021.
I have such wonderful memories of trekking with Russell and Wendy (and Gill) in Nepal during our carefree twenties. This year, as we four school friends celebrate turning 48, we want to celebrate and appreciate the gift of another year—especially for those who never had the chance. What better way to celebrate our health than by taking on this physical challenge while raising funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity, which supported Russell through his illness.
In September, I will be participating in the Edinburgh KiltWalk with my dear friends. We will be raising a glass or two to Russell and all our special memories, while also raising money for the Beatson.
If you can, please consider making a donation to help support everyone who relies on the essential services provided by this incredible charity.
