Story

On the 4 July 2026 I will take on a 20 mile trail across a section of this world famous landmark, built to guard the North West frontier of the Roman Empire. Skirting the Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall is just under an hour from the vibrant city of Newcastle, home to a Marie Curie Hospice.

This will be in memory of my best friend Fiona who was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. The doctors initially thought she'd have at least 12 years. Sadly, that was not the case. Fiona deteriorated very quickly and was in a lot of pain. In February 2026, she was admitted to the hospital. The specialist informed her with real compassion and honesty that her treatment had stopped working.

Fiona loved life and wanted to be here but not the way she was. She was in a lot of pain. The staff arranged for her transfer to Marie Curie at Mortonhall within a few days, where she spent her time left surrounded by love.

Fiona was courageous, fighter, stubborn, loved the outdoors, and even in the end, still worrying about others.

Marie Curie made sure her time left was surrounded by compassion, care, and as comfortable as possible. It takes very special people to give end of life care day in and day out.

I will be forever grateful for Marie Curie making Fiona's last days as comfortable as possible.

In memory of Fiona and support of others getting the best care possible please donate what you can.

All the money raised will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support to people living with a terminal illness, and their families at the toughest time.

£3 helps fund a meal for a patient in one of our hospices.
