Story
Last November I had Spinal Fusion Surgery to correct double scoliosis, also known as S-shaped scoliosis. This is because the curve of my spine was so severe that bracing and physical therapy wouldn't have worked. I now have 2.25kg of titanium in my back in the form of rods and pins to straighten my spine out.
If unchecked severe scoliosis causes breathing issues, nerve pain, visible body asymmetry and impaired organ function.
My scoliosis was idiopathic, as is the case in up to 85% of cases. Scoliosis research focuses on working out why it occurs including whether or not specific genes and identifying risk factors as well as improving diagnosis time which is so key to successful management.
This is why I am raising money on behalf of Scoliosis Support and Research (SSR) by doing the Parker 100. The Parker 100 is a fixture unique to Repton School where you commit to walking 100 miles during the course of the Lent term - the coldest and wettest of our three school terms.
Scoliosis Support and Research looks to create UK-wide awareness, to identify the causes and to advance medical research and treatments for scoliosis as well as offer guidance and support to individuals and families affected by scoliosis. Something key to people like me and families like mine.
It would be wonderful if you could donate any amount of money you could spare so I could reach my target.
Thank you
Lillian
