Lands End to John O'Groats

Fiona Robinson is raising money for Aphasia Support

Lands End to John O'Groats · 7 September 2025

Aphasia is a language disorder which affects a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand language. There are an estimated 350,000 people living with a diagnosis of Aphasia in the UK, often the devastating result of a stroke or head injury. Aphasia Support is a registered charity providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support to people with Aphasia, and their carers. The charity aims to improve the quality of life for people with Aphasia, helping them to regain control, confidence and independence. With your kindness and generosity, we can create a world where every person with Aphasia has access to support and can communicate with confidence.

Story

As many of you know, I love being outdoors and I love being on my bike, but this year, I am taking on the biggest challenge yet, (attempting) to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats. This is a ride I have always wanted to do, but I am also using it as an opportunity to raise funds to a charity very close to my family.

6 years ago, my step dad, Peter, suffered a massive stroke. To watch him and my mum rebuild their lives has been remarkable. Whilst Peter still has significant mobility challenges, one of the biggest impacts on their lives has been the Aphasia.

Aphasia is a language disorder which affects a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand language. Imagine not being able to partake in a conversation with your friends, communicate how you feel or even ask for a cup of tea. This is the reality of the 350,000 living with Aphasia in the UK.

Aphasia support in a Yorkshire based charity who have really helped my step dad (and mum) with technology, 121 support and fortnightly cafe's. All funds raised will continue this work in their community and help others suffering with this little known condition.

Thanks for reading the story and thank you for your contribution
