Story
Rachael Priest and I are running the most northerly marathon in the UK for our dear friend Hannah Brookes otherwise known as Hannah Banana on 7th July 2024 in Kirkwall, Orkney.
I worked with Hannah on board MV Halton in 2017 for 6 months. We shared a cabin and there's not many people I could have done that with. We had an amazing time with so many laughs and some tears along the way. It was a special time visiting some incredible places including Mull, Orkney, Shetland & Norway. We dived in some stunning places together, rode Icelandic ponies, saw Orca in Shetland and went swimming in remote bays in Norway and climbed Muckle Flugga in our drysuits. It was an epic adventure and I'm so glad I got to share it with her.
After I left Rachael took over from me and had her own adventures with Hannah on board MV Halton and Clasina.
Hannah was truly a light that burned twice as bright but half as long and sadly took her own life in February 2022. That news was deeply shocking. She was just 31 but had packed so much in.
Two years on knowing we'll never truly make sense of what happened, Rachael and I wanted a glimmer of something positive to come from it. For all that knew her and the lives she touched, we're running the St Magnus Marathon on the 7th July 2024 in her memory to raise money for Papyrus UK to help provide support to young people during their darkest of times. Shockingly suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35. I didn't know this. Please give what you can in memory of her life.
