International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality. IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific. IWD is a movement, powered by the collective efforts of all. The IWD 2026 theme is the ‘Give To Gain Campaign’, which encourages a mindset of generosity and collaboration. When people, organizations, and communities give generously, opportunities and support for women increase. Giving is not a subtraction, it's intentional multiplication. When women thrive, we all rise.
At Hallam Korfball, we are inviting all members to bring girls along to our training session on the 4th of March. There will be a small donation fee of £3 to anyone who attends, to raise money for World Villages for Children. World Villages for Children supports the education programmes of the Sisters of Mary to run live-in schools for the most deprived boys and girls across the world.
In the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Honduras and Tanzania, World Villages for Children provide equitable access to education for boys and girls and fund school places, and all the daily care needed for nearly 20,000 of the world’s most deprived children each year. Alongside a strong academic foundation, the children learn the vocational and social skills they need to find employment, gain confidence and self-respect.
