Fliss and Rod's marathon swims for Alzheimer's Society · 9 November 2024

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Hello,

Thanks for looking at our fundraising page 😊

We're Fliss and Rod, a husband and wife team who also work together at our company Argent Advancements. If you know us in a professional capacity then you probably know us as Felicity and Martin (Yes, everyone is surprised to know that Rod is a Martin, and vice versa! That's the fun thing about nicknames!)

We both share a passion for keeping our bodies and minds healthy and active, and we regularly swim, run and cycle together, but swimming is the thing we enjoy together the most as the weather doesn't matter, you know you're leaving with wet hair every time!

After a swim session we enjoy time in the sauna because we learnt how regular sauna use has the potential to reduce the likelihood of developing Dementia and / or Alzheimer's, which are truly upsetting and life changing diseases. Fliss' dear Grandma Ruth lived the last months of her life in a Dementia care home so we have seen the impact of Dementia, not just for the individual but for their loved ones too.

In case you haven't heard of a marathon swim, let us fill you in. A marathon swim is a 10 km (6.2 miles) swim done in one session. It's the equivalent effort of running a 26.2 mile marathon. That means it would take an elite marathon runner (running 26.2 miles) and an elite marathon swimmer (swimming 10 km) the same time to finish their races (about 2 hours!) They would burn similar calories and feel similarly fatigued. Marathon swimming is an Olympic event.

Our marathon swims will take place at the Aquatic Center (Olympic pool) at Stratford on 9th November 2024. We are excited and apprehensive!

We each have to swim 10 km, which is 200 lengths each in the 50 meter Olympic pool (or 400 lengths in a standard 25 meter pool.) We think we could both finish in about 3.30 hours, but we don't really know as we haven't done anything like this before. We will see! 😬

We're so grateful for your support and for any donation you feel able to make at this time. We appreciate that it's an expensive time to be alive so please don't leave yourself short, even a couple of pounds makes a big difference.

You'll find lots of info about Alzheimer's Society here.

Thank you so very much,

Fliss and Rod
