Story

Starting on the 11th and finishing on the 13th July I will be attempting to complete the infamous “Way of the Roses” cycle route.

The 170 mile journey in 3 days starts in Morecombe in the North West, it travels into the Yorkshire Dales and across the North Yorkshire Moors, finishing on the East Coast in Bridlington. The route is not easy one and has challenge many experienced cyclists.

Having recently reached semi-retired status, I wanted to do something to raise awareness and much needed funds for my amazing 6 year old Grandson Eben, who has muscular dystrophy. Eben's muscles are unable to produce Collagen IV protein and alongside his symptoms this led to him being diagnosed with Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (UCMD).

UCMD is a severe, life-limiting, progressive condition that leads to extreme muscle weakness. It affects the skeletal muscles which impacts areas like walking, if Eben gains the ability to walk he will lose this skill in early adolescence, he is also likely to face respiratory issues, muscle contractures and scoliosis later in life. Treatments and equipment are available to help manage these but sadly, there is currently no cure for UCMD however there is hope in the form of promising research being done in this area.

I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and really challenge myself so that the many people I have go to know over the years, my friends, work colleagues, community will support me for this great cause.

Full disclaimer, I am no cyclist which makes this a huge personal challenge for me. I’ve managed to get hold of a second-hand bike and the appropriate kit which has allowed me to throw myself into the training. I’ve gradually been building up my fitness and cycling capability since the start of May, so I’m confident of making the finish line. With the help of some friends and an experienced team of cyclists who will be joining me on this journey, I’m now ready to take on this huge challenge!

Thanks for your support

80% of funds raised will go towards UCMD research and 20% will be kept in a welfare account for Eben's future needs.
