We share our lives with cats. They bring happiness to millions of us every day. Yet too many cats don’t get the care and kindness they deserve. At Cats Protection we stand up for every cat to make life better for cats and the people who care for them.

Story

Monty has lived quite the adventurous life. Once a much-loved pet, he decided he didn’t care for sharing his home with other cats and instead struck out on his own in Cinderford — becoming a true “gentleman of the road.” With his chunky frame, it was clear he had no shortage of willing hoteliers, café owners, and kind strangers feeding him along the way!

But life as a stray eventually took its toll. Monty was in a much worse state than his full tummy suggested. He had:

• Cancerous ears

• Inflamed eyes

• A tumour under his right eye

• Two rotten teeth needing extraction

• And a host of unwanted “hoppy friends” in his coat

The Rescue

Catching Monty wasn’t easy! He was far too clever for our traps, likely because he always had a full tummy thanks to the many kind people who fed him. Our efforts were also made trickier when well-meaning locals — keen to help — tried to move the trap.

For anyone unfamiliar, these traps are safe and humane. They are designed to close behind the cat so we can collect them quickly and safely, without harm. Leaving them in place is really important, because once a cat learns to avoid a trap, the chances of success are minimal.

Thankfully, one caring neighbour spotted Monty finally wander inside, quickly called our helpline, and we were able to collect him straight away. That moment gave Monty his best chance at the urgent care he so desperately needed.

The Transformation

At the vet, Monty underwent urgent surgery. Miraculously, our amazing vet Jake was able to remove the tumour without taking his eye, something we had feared was inevitable. He was also neutered, treated for parasites, and had his sore teeth removed.

Just two days later, Monty was already transformed — his fur soft and clean, his meals regular, and his personality beginning to shine. The tumour has now been sent for analysis, and while it may prove cancerous, we are hopeful that Monty still has a bright future ahead. What he needs most now is a loving home and a chance to finally settle down.
