Story

In Loving Memory of Mark Bennett to remember and celebrate the life of my brother.

Mark was born on August 4, 1977, in the heat of a summer heatwave, and perhaps that’s where his fiery spirit began. He was the second child of David and Lucille, and my little brother; he was big brother to Elizabeth (Lizzie), and the older brother to Nathan and Toby. Mark was also a stepbrother to Danny and Tiffany.

From a young age, Mark stood out. He was never one to simply follow the rules or go along with the crowd. Whether it was standing up for the underdog, challenging authority, or refusing to follow instructions he found unreasonable, Mark always marched to the beat of his own drum. And that sense of independence stayed with him throughout his life.

Mark was the first of us to leave home, setting up his own household with his wife, Ruth. Mark became a father at a young age, something he was incredibly proud of. He was so proud of his son Luke, and a decade later, that pride grew even more with the birth of his son, Alfie. Mark’s family didn’t stop growing there. He was later blessed with two beautiful grandchildren, his granddaughter Khalilah and his grandson Ljay, not long after Tanika joined the family, all of whom brought him so much joy.

Mark and Ruth shared many happy years together, raising their boys and building a home filled with love. Mark was a deeply committed family man, and his devotion to his family was unwavering. When Mark and Ruth's paths diverged, they remained close friends, speaking often, always supporting one another, and remained dedicated to co-parenting their sons, Luke and Alfie, also spending time together with their grandchildren, supporting them with love and care.

In September of 2023, Mark was diagnosed with heart failure. It was a tough blow, and although it led to a period of health struggles and limited mobility, Mark’s spirit never dimmed. He embraced life in a way that only he could. During this time, Mark’s life expanded even more when he connected with Jodie, a long-standing friend, and their friendship blossomed into love.

Despite Mark’s ill health, he was happy with how his life was progressing with Jodie. One of the highlights for him was their recent holiday to Magaluf, which he often spoke about fondly with that cheeky smile.

Mark passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 1, 2025, at home.

While the pain of his loss is deeply felt, we find comfort in the love and memories he leaves behind.

Mark was a man of many roles—son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, stepbrother, and even "dog-dad" to his beloved Bella and Bow. He loved his family dearly, especially his two sons, Luke and Alfie, for whom being a father brought him unparalleled joy. And I know Mark’s friends here today will remember the unique bond he shared with each of you. Many of you have been in his life for decades, and for that, we are all thankful.

As a child, Mark had a deep love for animals, a connection that many couldn’t fully understand but that was truly special to him. This love extended to his dogs, Bella and Bow, who were more than pets—they were family.

Mark’s life wasn’t without struggles. He faced periods of serious illness, but none more significant than his recent diagnosis of heart failure. Despite his health challenges, Mark never let them define him. He found strength, resilience, and joy simply spending time with his family, Jodie and being in the presence of those he loved.

It’s hard to capture the full essence of Mark in such a short time, but those of us who knew him—whether as family, friends, or neighbours—can attest to the impact he had on our lives. Mark was fiercely independent, unapologetically himself, and deeply loyal to the people he cared about. He wasn’t one to shy away from a laugh, a joke, or a good time, and he’d want us to remember him with smiles, not tears.

I know he would want us to honour his memory by living life to the fullest. As he used to say, "Live every day like it's your last."

Mark was truly loved by so many, and his legacy will live on in each of us—in the lessons he taught us, the love he gave, and the way he made us all feel special in his own unique way.
