TREK TO MACHU PICCHU 2024 - Forget Me Nots · 20 September 2024

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Embarking on a Journey of Love and Remembrance.

Embarking on this 10-day trek to Machu Picchu holds a profound significance for me and my family. It's a journey that carries the weight of an unfulfilled dream of our father and his wife - but tragically, Alzheimer's stole from them. Witnessing the gradual erosion of our dads memories and faculties has been an indescribable heartache, a relentless storm of emotions for us all. He is one of the most clever people we have ever known. Nothing phased him. If someone could do it, so could he! But now, his capabilities diminished into the last stages of this cruel disease and eventually he was taken away from us on the 23rd December 2023. This trek is our way of turning the pain felt by many into purpose. To find comfort in knowing that his spirit will walk beside me every step of the way. This is not the 1st time I have started to plan for this! I initially planned to walk this journey with a dear friend and work colleague, Mr Steve Parks, both for our own reasons and cause. Unfortunately, at the tender age of 46, his life also came to a sudden and tragic end due to heart failure. So, understandably, I left it for a while… and now I plan to pick this back up and get it done for 2024.

This expedition is not just a personal journey for me and my family though. It's a collective endeavour, a shared commitment to remember and honour. I have pulled together a team of great people to come with me - each with their own story. We will all trek in memory of dear friends and other family members we have lost far too soon. Their absence is a constant reminder of the fragility of life, and the urgency to act. And so, with each stride we carry, their spirits follow, weaving their legacy into each part of an incredible journey.

Beyond the echoes of our personal narratives, this trek is a declaration of solidarity with the Alzheimer’s Society. It's a pledge to stand shoulder to shoulder with the countless individuals and families impacted by this relentless disease.

This adventure is not just a tribute, but a resounding call to arms. It's an opportunity to channel our grief and hope into tangible change, to join the creators of a future where Alzheimer's holds no territory. With each stride, we forge a path toward that brighter tomorrow, carrying with us the stories, the dreams, and the unbeatable spirit of those we hold close in our hearts.

Please help us to help them! Your donation will eventually make a huge difference to the impact this will have on many lives in the future!
