The Trust provides a range of activities and services, in a beautiful setting, to support children and young people with special needs, as well as their families and carers. The centre prides itself on it's calm, friendly atmosphere that allows children and families to relax, socialise, and play.

Story

Camp Mohawk is a 5 acre site nestled in the woods above Wargrave and run by The Woodland Centre Trust. It is a unique place where children with special needs can explore and have fun with their families or carers.

Every corner of the outdoor and indoor spaces are designed to inspire and entertain these children to play safely, encouraging exploration with tactile and aural stimulation all around. Families of these children have somewhere they can go to where everyone can relax together. The outdoor space has climbing frames, swings, castles, sensory gardens and quiet areas, all wheelchair accessible. There is a swimming pool with sloping sides - safe for everyone. Indoors there are rooms designed with such imagination to make them entertaining, safe and stimulating at the same time - a ball park, music room - with touch sensitive floor sensors which work the drums for example - starlit luminescent ceilings and a white room full of padded seats and interactive wall panels where the children are able to choose what they find stimulating.

A colleague from work introduced me to Camp Mohawk and how much it has meant to her family - both her son who has special needs, but also to his siblings. I was privileged to be shown around the camp by her and learn more about how amazing this place is. They have 700 families actively using the facilities plus special needs schools and respite services leading to 17,000 visitors a year.

The camp is run by the trust with dedicated support staff on site who help families during their visit, but also help them to navigate the complications of bringing up a child with special needs.

Many families contribute to the trust, but I would like to show my support and hope you will feel the same.

I've promised my family this is the last half marathon!
