Kingston Half Marathon · 6 October 2024

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

Hi,

I will be running the Kingston Half Marathon this autumn in memory of my Dad who I lost to pancreatic cancer in 2020.

As someone who until a few months ago couldn't run for more than 1 minute without needing to walk this is a huge challenge for me, but it will be worth all the blood, sweat and tears (I'm sure there will be many) knowing that the money I raise will be supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Please read on below (if you feel comfortable to do so) to learn more about the work the charity does, the signs, symptoms and facts about pancreatic cancer, and what the money you donate will help to achieve.

But first, a thank you in advance for your donations - I am so excited to be taking on this challenge to raise money for such an important cause.

ABOUT PANCREATIC CANCER

- it is the deadliest common cancer

- more than 50% of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months. This hasn't changed in the last 50 years

- only 7% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will live for another 5 years

- 70% of people diagnosed never receive any treatment

- survival rates for most cancers have improved enormously, but the same cannot be said about pancreatic cancer

- just 3% of the UK cancer budget goes into funding research into pancreatic cancer which is why donations like this are imperative

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

- indigestion

- tummy or back pain

- unexplained weight loss

- changes to bowel habits

- loss of appetite

- jaundice

If you experience any of these symptoms, please book in an appointment with your GP.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS CAN HELP

Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to changing the statistics mentioned above and to transform the futures of those diagnosed with the disease. Earlier detection and cancer-killing therapies are an integral part of the charity's research strategy.

Early detection for pancreatic cancer is crucial as for many, including my dad, the disease is not found until it's too late and the patient's only option is palliative care.

If you would like to find out more about the research your money will be funding, please do follow the link to Pancreatic Cancer UK for more information: https://www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/research/our-research/
