Running for Hope: Francisco's Journey

London Landmarks Half Marathon 2025 · 6 April 2025 ·
Hello! My name is Francisco, and I’m excited to share that I’ve signed up for my first half marathon. But this isn’t just any race; it’s a chance to make a difference. I am running for a charity that supports mental health, aiming to bring hope and awareness to a cause that’s close to my heart.
At just four years old, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Perthes disease, a rare condition where the head of my femur deteriorates. This diagnosis didn’t come easily; it took my family nearly two agonizing years to find the right answers. As a child, I could sense the worry and fear in my parents' eyes, and the stress it brought to our home was immense.
The doctors told me I would have to undergo multiple surgeries, wear leg braces, and spend countless hours on bed rest. They painted a picture of a life without sports, without the joy of physical activity that kids love. I could have accepted that fate, resigning myself to limitations. But deep down, I knew I wanted more—I craved movement, freedom, and adventure.
So, I made a choice. I turned to competitive swimming, finding solace in the water and strength in my determination. It wasn’t easy, but I persevered. Fast forward to today: I’m 31 years old, and I’ve not only conquered my fears but also completed my first triathlon. Now, I’m gearing up to run my first half marathon this coming April, and I’m doing it all for the kids who feel trapped by their circumstances, just as I once did.
But this journey is about more than just me. It’s about reaching out to those who may feel hopeless, especially children facing their own struggles—whether it's a chronic illness, mental health challenges, or feelings of isolation. I want to show them that their circumstances don’t define them. With the right support and determination, they, too, can rise above their challenges.
The funds I raise through this half marathon will go directly to the Mental Health Foundation, dedicated to helping children and families. These resources provide essential tools for coping, healing, and thriving, often when it feels like there’s no way out. Together, we can illuminate the path towards understanding, compassion, and resilience.
Your support is crucial. By donating, you’re not just sponsoring my race; you’re investing in a future where every child has access to the care they need. You’re helping to create a world where kids can feel empowered to tell their stories, just as I am.
Join me on this journey. Let’s inspire hope, spark conversations about mental health, and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who need it most. Together, we can run towards a brighter future.
