Story
Hi, I’m Frank, and on the 16th of March, I’m taking on the challenge of running the Barcelona Marathon—for my Mum and in aid of The Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust.
In January, I heard the news no one ever wants to hear—my Mum was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. By the time it was found, it had already spread to her bones, causing a fracture in her thigh. In just a few months, she’s been through life-changing surgery to remove the tumour, had her thigh bone and hip reconstructed, and undergone a second major operation to remove her thyroid. Now, she’s preparing for intensive radioactive-iodine therapy, which we’re all hoping will cure the disease.
Being a doctor has made this journey even more personal. I see every day how much cancer charities like The Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust do to empower patients and families, giving them the knowledge, advocacy, and support they need during the toughest times. Seeing my Mum’s incredible strength has put everything into perspective—including my own training. When my knees ache and the going gets tough, I channel Mum’s incredible resilience and strength… Come on Tan!!
I would be so grateful for any donation, big or small, to help support this incredible charity and families like ours.
