Update:
I am pleased to say I managed to complete the Ironman 70.3 in Austria. As expected, it was very hard but the cycle up a 13 km mountain really made the rest of the cycle ride and run much harder than I imagined.
On 30 August 2026, my son and I will be taking on the Zell am See-Kaprun Ironman 70.3 in Austria, a challenge that includes a 1.9km swim, a 90km cycle ride, and a half marathon.
For many people, completing an Ironman is a significant achievement. For me, it feels especially daunting. I haven't competed in a triathlon for more than 30 years, swimming has never been my strongest discipline, and after three knee operations I have done very little running over the past six years.
There have been many moments when I questioned my sanity. However, with determination, support from family and friends, and many months of training, I am now confident that I can make it to the start line and, with luck, complete the course.
I'm taking on this challenge to raise money for the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity that has helped many people (including a number I know) to achieve their ambitions. Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects people from all walks of life. It’s estimated that at least 1 in 10 people in the UK have dyslexia but it is still often misunderstood. No two people with dyslexia are the same, so it often goes undiagnosed. The strengths and talents that people with dyslexia have can help them make a difference in the world.
If you can support me, I would be incredibly grateful. Your generosity will help make a meaningful impact and inspire me every step, pedal and swim stroke of the way.
