My son Alfie is a special young man. He brings so much to the world and those around him. A hug and a smile from him lights up our world.

But life is not simple for Alfie. He is profoundly autistic and has a rare form of epilepsy. His communication is limited and he has regular, disorientating seizures. Sometimes many in a single day. He needs specialist help and constant support.

Unfortunately, the world isn’t always understanding or accessible for Alfie and autistic people like him. That's why thirteen years ago, we were forced to take a heart-breaking decision. For his own safety and to provide the specialist 24 hour care and health support he needed, he had to leave home. Since then, he has lived in a specialist setting with skilled care and schooling. He is now 26.

Families battle week after week to get the care, health and learning they desperately need. Many families fall into crisis with no safe place for their autistic family member.

Tragically, and avoidably, autistic people die significantly younger than they need to. A recent study pointed to a reduced lifespan of up to 15 years for some. Today, just over a quarter of a million people in England are waiting for an autism diagnosis.

Behind every statistic is a person facing barriers to education, employment, inclusion and understanding.

That's why I chair Autism Action. We push for the changes and action that will help autistic people to be less vulnerable and to live safer, healthier and happier lives.

Our team of cyclists will be pushing too, through long days, tired legs and tough miles. They believe autistic people and their families deserve better - more equal access to support and opportunities.
