Kinder Edges Hike · 25 April 2025

Our vision is of a Peak District National Park which is thriving for nature and people and protected for future generations.

Story

BACKGROUND: The Mass Trespass & the People's Mountain

This epic challenge route has been deliberately planned to coincide with the 93rd anniversary of the iconic Mass Trespass event of 24 April 1932. Instead of following the footsteps of Benny Rothman and other members of the British Workers' Sports Federation up William Clough out of Hayfield, we'll celebrate the entirety of the "People's Mountain", by circumnavigating a full loop of Kinder Scout's edges from Edale.

The trespass helped focus national attention on the unjust privacy of so much of our finest countryside. This ultimately led to the creation of national parks and fittingly, the Peak District became the first national park to be designated in the UK on 17 April 1951. It would take another 50 years for walkers’ rights over open country and common land to be secured in the C.R.O.W. Act of 2000. A triumph, right here in Northern England, for social justice in the face of a wealthy ruling establishment.

Given how hard so many fought for its right to exist, we share the belief of the Foundation that the Peak District National Park should be enjoyed and protected for everyone forever.

Please enjoy Kinder in all its glory.

ABOUT THE PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK FOUNDATION

Our vision is a National Park enjoyed and conserved by everyone, forever. It should be a vibrant, colourful, and safe home for the wildlife we all love. The Park’s heritage tells our story and inspires future generations, so let’s celebrate it.

Our right to enjoy the National Park was hard won by ordinary folk. In that spirit, let’s fight to make it ever more accessible, for everyone to enjoy. But it is also unique and very fragile; we must always strive to keep it special. This is what we believe – and why we exist. With your support, we can start to make good things happen.
