The Friends of Lewes Victoria Hospital (FOLVH) raise funds to support NHS services to deliver excellent care in the community. We have raised more than £6 million over the last fifty years. In the last five years, we have donated over £800,000 to improve equipment and facilities at the hospital.

Story

FOLVH are continuing the theme of running and as part of the ever continuing need to fundraise. FOLVH are sending Team FOLVH to run The Brighton Marathon to complete our Spring Marathon Running Grand Slam Fundraiser.

The Team FOLVH Marathon running team for this part of the Spring Marathon Running Grand Slam include: Andy Perris, Rob Dyke and Steven Lloyd.

Andy Perris is an avid runner and is excited to complete The Brighton Marathon. As a photographer he thinks it will provide a few challenges as he’s used to running nice countryside trails with lots of opportunities to stop and take a nice picture (or at least using that as an excuse for a quick recovery break!).

Andy says: "I started running five years ago and I did the Beginners Class run by Lewes Athletic Club. At the time, my main aim was running 5K under thirty minutes. But the running became addictive and it is a big part of my life now. My runs are usually off road with hills to walk up, stopping to take pics and have food. The thought of running 26.2 miles even for a brilliant cause terrifies me but is a perfect fit for me as gives me a target to work to and progress from the Half Marathon I completed in aid of Alzheimer’s Society a month ago. As part of my fundraising for Lewes Victoria Hospital, I am approaching businesses that I have worked with over the years."

Rob Dyke is relatively new to marathon running, recently completing his first Marathon in Barcelona on Sunday 10 March. Living in Lewes with school age kids, Rob says “Myself and my friends around me, we really value having the hospital nearby. Our families routinely use Lewes Victoria Hospital – particularly the Urgent Treatment Centre at least once a year and couldn’t be without it. As part of my sponsorship plans, I am reminding my school community here at Southover School to pitch in as we all are so fortunate to have it on our doorstep.”

Steve Lloyd is delighted to be supporting the Friends of Lewes Victoria Hospital by running the 2024 Brighton Marathon.

Steve says “This will be my 4th marathon and provides me with an opportunity to raise money for a great cause. I'm hoping to raise as much money as I can as part of Team FOLVH! My love of running started from a young age driven by a teacher at my school who would take us on cross country runs come rain or shine – at the time running up and down hills in the freezing cold probably didn’t seem that fun but it set me on a path of appreciating the benefits of running not just for physical health but of course mental health as well. As I have got older, I have continued to run using it for exercise, relaxation, and for focus. Whilst the marathon and associated training is a big undertaking, I love the focus it provides and the sense of achievement even just getting through the training runs. Unlike some shorter events where there is a bit more of an opportunity to just ‘turn up and run’ there are so many key elements to a marathon; training, managing the long run schedule, sleep and recovery, fuel and hydration and the pre-race prep. Trying to balance all these things and find the perfect balance is fascinating, I’m not sure I have got it right yet but I love the challenge! I’m pretty competitive with myself so am always setting myself a time I want to achieve in my head, but with a busy work and family life currently I am realistic about where I am at with my training and am going into this run with the aim of enjoying the race, absorbing the great crowd support (I did the Brighton marathon a few years back and the support is amazing) and raising money for a great cause.”

The FOLVH team running in The Brighton Marathon on Sunday 7th April will be raising money for:

Point of Care Blood Testing Equipment

Theatre Lights and Camera

Ophthalmic Camera (Optical Coherence Tomography)

Bone Density Scanner (Dexa Scanner)
