The Big Half 2024 · 1 September 2024 ·

We are a small charity run entirely by volunteers in the UK. We focus on a remote rural area of Kenya called Kipkelion. It’s a mountainous and somewhat neglected region with about 300,000 inhabitants, most of whom live by subsistence farming. Many people in Kipkelion live miles from the nearest hospital, and most schools are poorly equipped. We work in partnership with a locally based Kenyan NGO to provide clean water and sanitation in schools in Kipkelion, to ensure that pupils (especially girls) can attend school regularly. We also provide resources to bring basic medical facilities to the remote areas of the region, in collaboration with local health officials. We are also active in encouraging the local people in their efforts to eradicate FGM in the area. All of our work is done in partnership with the local community and is guided by their decisions as to their priorities, so that all of our projects are designed to be completely sustainable and of permanent benefit to the community.

Story

Miss Denyer, Mr Coy and Miss Humphreys are running the London Big Half in support of Friends of Kipkelion, our school linked charity. The money we raise will be spent on running educational courses for young people in Kipkelion. The courses are designed to help young people, in particular those with disabilities, start their own business. Many young people in Kipkelion can’t find a job when they leave school, and those with disabilities are not able to take part in the heavy farm work which dominate the local economy. The courses show people how they can earn money through activities such as bee keeping, breeding chickens, mending shoes and they are taught how to make a simple business plan and budget, and then provided with the basic items they need to get going – e.g. a bee hive or some tools. These educational courses are really popular and each course costs £475 and 15 young people can take part. Thank you so much for all your support!
