Story
Fulbourn Open Gardens is always a wonderful community event, where for one day every two years gardeners around the village share their beautiful outdoor spaces for the public to visit and enjoy. This year we are lucky to have a range of gardens, both big and small.
A high resolution version of the event map can be found HERE, with paper copies available to collect at the school fete until 2pm.
Please donate if you enjoy the event, all money raised goes to Fulbourn Primary School PTFA to fund enrichment experiences and equipment for all the children at the school.
This year we have 10 gardens which have generously agreed to be opened up for us:
A - 35 Station Road
A 70m x 15m garden backing on to fields, split into several areas with different styles and places to sit in the sun or shade. Includes a long perennial border, a white bed, a winding woodland path, a prairie garden and a mini-orchard. Lots of roses, evergreen topiary and drought tolerant perennials and grasses throughout.
B - 2 Thomas Road
Hidden away behind a secluded gate lies a beautifully manicured garden. A peaceful retreat designed for relaxation and quiet discovery. Lush greenery, carefully kept pathways, and gentle natural surroundings create a calming escape with a delightful surprise waiting beyond the entrance. Our garden is created with both nature and nurture . We hope it reflects a sanctuary of peace and inspiration.
C - 24 Home End
The garden contains a large pond with elusive golden orfe and goldfish. There are many mature trees and some well-established Acers. Cordon apples screen the view of a fruit cage from the house. There are a variety of informal borders with an emphasis on bee friendly plants and a no spray policy.
D - 4 Pettits Close
Path leads to an open glade with a fenced vegetable growing area…..actual garden access is by a gate from this open area. The garden is small and on three sides of the house, creating different viewpoints and spaces to use at different times of the day. There is no lawn, just modern paving and deep planting areas filled with a vast range of plants that tolerate such conditions - very useful inspiration for those with smaller shaded spaces.
E - 2 Oslars Way
We have a Chemical free and nature friendly garden with a wide variety of plants in an informal setting. It is a haven for wildlife and includes a small frog and insect pond. We will be selling tea, coffee and cake at £3.00 per head (cash only, proceeds going to the school fund) Seating is available around the garden.
F - Ruby Cottage, 9 Station Road
The garden is almost an acre with plenty of variety. The mixed planting close to the house is more formal. A greenhouse and small courtyard are tucked behind the house with a productive fruit and veg garden behind the black barn and a fruit cage near the summerhouse. Towards the boundaries the garden is wilder with a play space and seats here and there. Children must be supervised on the play equipment. Soft drinks are available.
G - 47 Hinton Road
Access to the rear garden is through the side gate and down the path.
In 2016 we moved into the house and set about rescuing a neglected garden. The overgrown borders were cleared and new beds created and planted.
We have tried to create a space where we can relax and enjoy the garden with year-round colour and interest whist also providing a home for wildlife. The new year brings snowdrops and hellebores, followed by many beautiful spring bulbs then in late Spring and Summer, colourful perennials, and herbaceous plants fill the borders. There are nearly forty varieties of rose in the garden, hopefully some of which will be in bloom on 20th June.
Seating around the garden and soft drinks will be available.
H - 35 Pierce Lane
A wildlife friendly, gently shambolic, cottage garden which surrounds our 17th century thatched cottage. You can follow the brick paths to the large herbaceous bed enclosed by a yew hedge and bushes. The roses have been there for over 30 years.
A mown path leads round a small meadow area to a bench which is a lovely spot to sit and look back at the cottage. In the spring it has a succession of snowdrops, daffodils, cowslips and blue bells.
The gravel path takes you round the house to a patio and small garden at the back.
We are planning to serve scones with cream and jam, and soft drinks from 3-5 ( weather permitting).
I - 2 Home End
We have about half an acre of garden, which has 2 sections. The upper section has a large greenhouse, growing mainly tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and chillies. There are a few vegetable plots, a small orchard and the rest is left to its own devices.
The lower section has a fishpond and a pergola next to it, covered with wisteria. On the lawn there is a large yew tree, and a flowering cherry tree. There is also a rose bed, dahlia bed, and a border with a variety of plants and trees.
J - The Garden House, Dogget Lane
A garden that has been four years in the making and started as building site. Luckily, more successes than failures, lots of hard work! It’s not perfect (please look past the odd weed here and there) but hopefully if you visited when we last opened, you might see a difference. Last time the Gin Den was just an image that we put up and asked you to use your imagination - now it’s a reality. The garden isn’t perfect but we love it and hope that you enjoy having a look
