AJ Bell Great Scottish Run Half Marathon 2025 · 5 October 2025 ·

INQUEST is the only charity combining free specialist support for bereaved people following a state related death, with the influence to achieve change in legislation, policy and practice. We are independent of government and entirely reliant on grants and donations to continue our vital work.

Story

Georgie, Cole and Justin (Georgie’s Dad) are running the great Scottish half marathon in memory of Georgie’s friend Lily, who passed away in a mental health hospital in 2022.

Lily was an amazing friend and person. She was bubbly, happy and was loved by everyone. We would spend our days going for walks with her dog Peanut, sitting in the sun in her garden, or having sleepovers after drinking too much at the pub. Before she got ill herself, Lily was a mental health nurse, and cared so much about the people around her. Lily was diagnosed with schizophrenia during our friendship, and spend a lot her the end of her life in and out of hospitals. I would visit her whenever I could, and she was always unwaveringly optimistic. We would make plans to go travelling when she was better, and she was going to come and stay with us in Scotland for a holiday. Unfortunately the hospital that was meant to be helping Lily ultimately led to her death due to inadequate staffing levels and care. I miss her everyday and I couldn’t think of a better charity to support for this run.

INQUEST are a charity that provides expertise and support families to investigate state related deaths. INQUEST have been working closely with Lily’s family over the past couple of years, and have supported her family to take the hospital to a tribunal, where they found that Lilly’s death was entirely preventable, and later will be supporting them through court.
