Summit For Cancer · 5 May 2023

We are a non-medical self-help group run by local people. Many of whom have had breast cancer. A breast cancer diagnosis can lead to people feeling very alone; meeting with others who are going through a similar experience and sharing information can really help.

Hi everyone my name is jack, I will be fundraising for Breast Mates on behalf of my Mum (Donna) who has been diagnosed with Secondary Breast Cancer and has been told it is unoperable. But is receiving treatment to hopefully maintain the tumor to stop growth and to prolong life.

My Mum can attend these Breast Mates meetings and talk to others who are in a similar positions. These ladies support each other through ups and downs and encourage each other to keep fighting their battles.

Here is some information about Breast Mates for you.

Breast Mates is a breast cancer support group and became a registered charity in Feburary 2017 offering support and information to people with breast cancer in Knowsley and the surrounding districts. We lease a small office in the centre of Prescot and we have access to a large meeting space in the building. We are a non-medical self-help group run by volunteers. At present all bar one of our trustees have had a breast cancer diagnosis.

Why set up a specialist breast cancer support group?

A breast cancer diagnosis can lead to people feeling very alone; meeting with others who are going through a similar experience and sharing information can really help. There have been great improvements in the treatment of breast cancer, people can have complex surgery and treatments lasting over many months and sometimes years. These improvements mean that more people are living with treatments that can cause side effects. This has led to an increase in the numbers needing our support.

Thank you for your time and generosity.
