Story
Hey everyone!
I'm running a half marathon on 10th October 2026 - which will mark the 5th year since my diagnoses of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
Many of you will know this but for those of you that are new here:
This rare autoimmune disease left me completely paralysed - unable to eat, drink or breathe without assistance. It is caused when the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, preventing signals between the brain to the body. Though chance of death is low, many people are left in life altering situations. I had a severe case which left me in the ICU for 3 months and in rehabilitation services after.
Though I may not be record breaking, every time I run I am reminded how far I've come and how grateful I am to be in full health. Needless to say, my experience was a distressing time for me and my loved ones. Thankfully, I got the support I needed due to the severity of my case. Many people with more acute conditions struggle to even get diagnosed or are not lucky enough to make a full recovery like me and will need on-going care and support.
So, please find the space in your hearts and wallets to donate to Inflammatory Neuropathies UK (formerly GAIN), a charity aiming to help people understand and manage all variants of GBS, CIDP, MMN, & other Inflammatory Neuropathies. They provide support, information, counselling and personal grants as well as advocate for these rare conditions in press, media, and parliament. They commission and fund field changing research to help better understand and support the community.
Thank you in advance for whatever you are able to donate and feel free to share this link!
