Story

Enarau Conservancy, a community-led conservation area in the Greater Maasai Mara, Kenya, is home to both iconic wildlife and the historical Maasai community. Since its establishment in 2022, the conservancy has been guided by a four-pillar strategy: Community Wellbeing, Conservation and Restoration, Research, and Technology.

At the heart of Enarau’s mission is harmonious coexistence between people and nature but this balance is increasingly threatened by water scarcity. As the dry seasons grow longer and more severe, the lack of reliable, clean water jeopardizes livelihoods, health, and even conservation efforts. Families walk for hours searching for water, while livestock and wildlife compete for dwindling resources, creating tension that undermines our shared future. At Enarau Conservancy, our vision is clear: to create a sustainable future where people, wildlife, and nature coexist in harmony

a) Empowering local communities to live alongside wildlife by promoting conservation-friendly livelihoods and sustainable resource use.

b) Becoming a model conservancy, inspiring other communities to adopt similar conservation approaches that benefit both people and nature.

c) Advancing scientific research to drive effective restoration and conservation efforts, ensuring biodiversity thrives in the Maasai Mara.

d) Harnessing technology to monitor ecosystem changes, track wildlife movement, and restore vital wildlife corridors.

Why Enarau Community Needs a Clean and Safe Water Project?

The Enarau community relies on seasonal water sources rivers, small streams, and rain-fed water pans that are unpredictable due to prolonged droughts. The consequences are:

a) Health at Risk: Contaminated water leads to an alarming increase in waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, E. coli, amoeba, and H. pylori, putting lives in danger.

b) Women and Children Bear the Burden: Families, especially women and children, walk long distances daily to fetch water, exposing them to risks and limiting their time for education and income-generating activities.

c) Increased Human-Wildlife Conflict: Scarce water means livestock and wildlife compete for the same limited sources, leading to dangerous interactions and straining conservation efforts.

d) Education Suffers: Children are often forced to skip school to help their parents collect water, affecting their future opportunities and the community’s long-term development.

e) Hindering Conservation and Growth: Without a reliable water supply, livelihoods suffer, food security is threatened, and conservation efforts are weakened

Your Support Can transform lives by:

a) Improving health and reducing waterborne diseases.

b) Ensuring children stay in school instead of spending hours fetching water.

c) Reducing human-wildlife conflict by securing water for both people and animals.

d) Empowering women by easing their daily burden and enabling them to focus on economic activities.

e) Strengthening conservation efforts, as communities with secure water access are more engaged in protecting the environment.
