Story
During the month of October I plan on attempting to run 500 kilometres to raise a minimum of £500 for the Cardiff and Vale Health Charity https://healthcharity.wales/
I am doing these challenges in memory of a friend and work colleague, Paul, who was a big supporter of the Health Charity to continue his amazing fundraising. He once even ran Cardiff Half Marathon in the Health Charity mascot outfit, Seren, which I've used as the cover photo.
During October, I'm planning to run a kilometre for every pound (up to the target amount) so that's 500 kilometres (311 miles) in one month which would be by far my biggest mileage month ever at an average of 16k (10 miles) per day.
During the month of October, I will taking on a number of events and other challenges...
Saturday 5th: Aberfields parkrun
Sunday 6th: Cardiff Half Marathon
Saturday 12th (am): Aberfields parkrun
Saturday 12th (pm): Pembrey Cross Country
Saturday 19th: Aberfields parkrun
Saturday 26th: Marathon Eryri (Snowdonia Marathon)
I'm also planning on some quirky challenges in between to get those kilometres racking up and keep it interesting.
I'll be updating my progress on my Instagram @garethgoesrunning

Post Challenge Update
I did it! I actually ended up far exceeding the 500 kilometre target and ended up averaging just over 21k (13.1 miles) per day to end on 658k (408.8 miles). I ran on all 31 days of the months with a minimum of 10k (6.2 miles) per day. Check out my instagram page @garethgoesrunning to see multiple fancy dress occasions, over 200 photo's taken and a small selection of videos. I've also written a blog about the challenge at https://garethjenkins84.wordpress.com/2024/10/31/the-october-challenge-for-cardiff-and-vale-health-charity-500-kilometres-in-a-month/

Cardiff & Vale Health Charity is the official charity of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board which supports all the wards, departments, hospitals, community services and research areas throughout Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan.
The Health Charity manages over 300 funds for equipment, research, treatment and patient care so that donations can support work and projects over and above what normal NHS funding provides. Providing cutting-edge research and equipment is central to our charitable role.
In addition, creating a more welcoming and comfortable hospital environment can make a huge difference to patients and their families. Art and music throughout the hospitals, refurbishment projects and some specialist counselling projects are provided by the Health Charity to enhance the patient experience. Many of our Health Charity supporters have a strong wish to thank the hospital staff who have made a difference to them and their families. Through their donations we are able to make hospital areas more comfortable for staff, providing rest areas, drinks facilities and other simple enhancements. Some funding is also used for employee wellbeing and to provide extra support for our dedicated clinical staff.
