Cambridge Half Marathon 2025 · 9 March 2025 ·

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Story

Sunday 9th March 2025 was my 68th birthday and I 'celebrated' by taking part in the TTP CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON 2025.

.......... and, as it was my 68th birthday I hoped to raise at least £68.00 for PROSTATE CANCER UK and ran as O.A.P. (Old Age Pensioner)! 😃

TTP CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON 2025 - Training.

In order to prepare for the TTP CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON 2025 I took part in the ALSAGER 5 (5 mile race, Sunday 2 February, 5 weeks before CAMBRIDGE) and the LONDON WINTER RUN (10k race, Sunday 23 February, 2 weeks before CAMBRIDGE).

TTP CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON 2025 - My results.

I am pleased to report that I completed the TTP CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON 2025 in 02:49:28, a bit slower than I had hoped but it was a very sunny warm day.

TTP CAMBRIDGE HALF MARATHON 2025 - The course.

The course is one of the best Half Marathons in the UK with the picturesque route taking you through the grounds of three Cambridge Colleges (St.Johns, Trinity and Jesus Colleges), Cambridge Town Centre, the villages of Grantchester (as in the ITV drama 'Granchester') and Trumpington.

The YouTube video below by Matt Clarry, shows the Cambridge Half Marathon route in real time (01:34:49) but can be viewed at different playback speeds (i.e. x2.0). It is an excellent video, unedited as shows the Cambridge Half Marathon route in all its splendour!

I am definitely entering for 2026 and I am sure you can see why by viewing Matts video.

PROSTATE CANCER UK

Why have I chosen PROSTATE CANCER UK? . A former work colleague ROY ROBERTS sadly has stage 4 Prostate Cancer and is currently undergoing treatment . ROY is the person who encouraged me to take part in long distance running and give up the glamorous life of 'On Your Marks', 'Set', BANG, 'Finish', - SPRINTING! 😏

In the late 1970's I was a Sprinter with the City of Stoke-on-Trent Athletic Club (see photos) . 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay were my events. Short fast sprints were what I was interested in and NOT boring long, long distance running 🥱! . In 2010 I was working in High Wycombe and was asked if I wanted to take part in a 10k run . 'Nah' was my reply but I then asked a question which changed EVERYTHING and that question was 'WHERE IS THE 10K RUN TAKING PLACE?' The reply was 'SILVERSTONE F1 TRACK!' . As I had an interest in F1 that 'Nah' soon became a YES! . After A LOT of treadmill 'training' I thought I was ready for the 10K but just after the start of the race, when I was plodding my way around the F1 track, I soon became exhausted after only 1k! . ROY (the organiser of our group entry) caught up with me and said 'I had set off too quickly and I need to pace myself' . Then ROY ran with me for the remainder of the 10k, chatting and encouraging me to keep running until I finished. I would not have completed that 10k if it were not for ROY. During the following two months I ran in two more of ROY's 10k events and my interest in 'boring' long distance running had started.🙄 😏

When I finished working in High Wycombe I kept in touch with ROY, continued with 'boring' long distance running and took part in the following events with ROY (see photos), Silverstone Half Marathon (on crutches in 2011), The Great South Run (2012), Silverstone Grand Prix 10k (2013), The Great South Run (2014), London Marathon (2017), and The Cambridge Half Marathon (2019).

My participation in those events would not have happened if it were not for ROY and THAT 10k run at SILVERSTONE . I'll be thinking of ROY during my run especially as he got me interested in this Long Distance Running Lark! . I will raise a can of Erdinger alcohol-free lager to ROY when I finish the Cambridge Half Marathon on Sunday 9th March, wish him well and hope his treatment is successful.

PROSTATE CANCER UK - I first became aware of PROSTATE CANCER UK in 2017 when TV presenter Bill Turnbull announced he had Prostate Cancer and appealed for men to get checked by their GP . As a result of a few toilet related 'issues' I've been checked and have been given the 'all clear' . However, I am aware that others only find out about their Prostate Cancer when tested for an unrelated condition, and sometimes, sadly, it can be too late . As there is no national screening program it’s up to you to request a test from your GP . I hope when I'm puffing and panting around the Cambridge Half Marathon course, my presence will remind at least one person to 'get checked'.
