“West Kingsdown Walking Football: Stepping Up for Alzheimer’s Research”
I’m raising funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK), a cause that has become very close to my heart and my family.
I’m 65 years old and spent over 40 years running our family car dealership. I feel incredibly lucky to have three wonderful, successful children, all of whom were Scouts when they were younger. That inspired me to spend 25 years as a Scout leader, which I thoroughly enjoyed. These days, my greatest joy is being grandad to my three beautiful grandchildren, all under the age of four.
My journey with Alzheimer’s began in 2019, when my family started noticing changes in my memory and behaviour. At first, we thought it might be stress, as we were caring for both my in-laws and my own parents, all living with dementia. After several assessments and scans, I was diagnosed with Sporadic Young Onset Alzheimer’s. This affects my ability to read, write and interpret what I see. I’ve had to give up driving, my motorbike and caravan, and I now need help with most day-to-day activities.
Walking football with this team has been a lifeline for me. I started after a heart attack 10 years ago and still play twice a week. The support from my teammates has been amazing—they’ve adapted the game so I can carry on playing. It really helps my physical health, my mood, and keeps me connected.
I’m taking on this challenge to support ARUK and help fund research for a cure.
Thank you so much for your support—it truly means the world.
