On the 27th of June last year, our world changed forever. My little brother Alex, someone who lit up every room, who lived with such energy, humour and heart, took his own life. There are no words big enough to describe the shock and heartbreak of losing someone so full of life. What has been even harder is knowing he was suffering in silence, carrying a weight none of us ever saw, when we all would have wanted to help him.

The hole he has left in our family, friends and everyone who loved him is enormous. Every single day since has been a reminder of how precious, fragile and important mental health truly is.

On the 21st of June, I’ll be riding the London to Brighton bike ride in memory of Alex. I’m doing it for him and for everyone who might be struggling the way he was. I’m doing it for the conversations he didn’t feel able to have and for the people who are still fighting battles we can’t always see.

I will be raising money for Mind, a charity that now means more to us than we can ever express. Their work provides support, guidance and a lifeline for people who feel alone in their mental health struggles. If we can raise enough to help even one person, then this ride will have been worth every mile.
