Story

Hello, my name is Gary Surette and I work for J.A Snow Funeral Home as a Funeral Director. In 2010, I joined my coworkers in the Bluenose Marathon 10k race to help raise money for The Firefighters Burn Unit. I wanted to challenge myself knowing it would make a difference in someone’s life. Two years later I graduated to a half marathon (21.1k) before increasing to a full marathon of 42.2k. From 2016 to 2023, I partnered with Team Diabetes to run marathons in Dublin, Lisbon, Edinburgh, Athens (virtually), Vancouver and Halifax.

The loss of our friend and coworker, Don MacKay has left a profound mark on our lives at Snow’s. Personally, Don and I had the same cancer and we were always there for each other, helping each other with doctor’s appointments. During our visits to Don at Hospice Halifax, we experienced how important it was to have such a place of dignity and support in the final days of life. My promise to Don was to help make someones time at Hospice Halifax a little better, as they did for him. Thank you Hospice Halifax!

Help us make our goal of $10,000 for Hospice Halifax. Thank You for your support to help others in our community!
