Story

Big Gav’s Golf Bash

In 2019, I was diagnosed with stage 2c melanoma on my scalp. After surgery and regular scans, I was given the all clear.

But in 2022, everything changed. I found a lump in my chest, and tests confirmed it was stage 4 melanoma cancer. It had spread throughout my body, and I was told I had less than a year to live.

That was three years ago. I’m incredibly lucky to still be here, but the reality is that my cancer is now terminal. It’s in my bones and vital organs, and there are no treatment options left for me at this time.

Throughout this journey, I’ve been surrounded by the most incredible support — from family, friends, colleagues, and even complete strangers. One of my best friends, kindly suggested putting on an annual golf day for me. It was humbling, and a bit weird at first (I’m still here mate!!!), but he knows I love a good party and combined with the sport I love, with the golf course being a place of sanctuary in my toughest moments, what better way to bring everyone together and lift spirits.

So Gav’s Big Golf Bash was born. It’s not just a golf day. It’s a celebration of friendship, life, and community. It’s also our way of giving back.

A charity that’s made a huge difference to me personally, and a few close friends of mine, is the WOLO Foundation (We Only Live Once). Based in Sussex, they support families affected by cancer with real, practical help — from everyday tasks to emotional and community support during treatment and beyond.

This event is our way of saying thank you to WOLO and paying it forward — helping them continue to support others going through the toughest of times.

If you can, please donate whatever you’re able. Every pound makes a difference.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support.
